Details
Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention, and the Zionsville
Anti-Mini Marathon is the perfect example of how disappointment in not
getting in a larger, more established event can lead to the creation of
an all-new race that's unique, scenic, quirky and interesting.
Organized six years ago by a member of the local
Zionsville Running Club as a response to not winning entrance into
nearby Indianapolis's 500
Festival Mini-Marathon in 2003, the
race has
since become something of a springtime tradition in the community, and
now draws around 250 runners each year.
The course for the race takes runners entirely on wooded dirt pathways
through Nancy Burton Park and Starkey Park, which lie just to the south
of the city center/downtown area of Zionsville. Participants run a 5K
course four times over what was formerly used as the Zionsville Boys
Cross Country team's training course, and may complete their choice of
one, two, three or four laps around the course followed by a brief
straightaway stretch to complete the 13.1 miles of the half-marathon.
By design, the race is a no-frills event -- there's no registration
fee, no awards, no t-shirts handed out, and no water stations along the
course. Basically, if you're interested in running in the event, you
show up and run! Also, because it's run on dirt trails, inclement
weather can play a big role in how the race goes, so come prepared for
a wet, muddy run if it's been raining.

Weather & Climate
Set in the northern suburbs of Indianapolis, just outside the I-465
beltway that encircles the greater metro area, the town of Zionsville
tends to see mild to moderately warm weather in the mid-spring season.
In May, monthly temperatures average between 75°F and
50°F, while rainfall amounts average around 4.47 inches for the
month (making it the area's second-wettest month of the year, on
average).
