Event Details

More than 1,200 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at the early summer 2009 running of Iowa's inaugural Council Bluffs Half Marathon, 5K Run/Walk and Fun Run, which took runners on a point-to-point course along the banks of the Missouri River that winds along the edge of the city, and through city parks and recreation areas to the finish line at Harrah's Casino, within view of the river and just south of the city's Dodge Park Golf Course.

The half marathon course begins just north of the golf course at the newly constructed Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which connects Council Bluffs and Omaha to the west over the Missouri River. From there, runners follow a course that's mostly flat and fast along a combination of paved city streets and running and biking trails through parks including Riverside Park and the Harvey's Recreational Complex, which hosts youth softball, baseball and soccer games and tournaments throughout the year.

After the sections of the course that run through the recreational complex, runners hit the turnaround point on Gifford Road just off the banks of Lake Manawa, and then head back through the Harvey's complex and Riverside Park and then back along the banks of the Missouri, with views of Nebraska across the river over their shoulders to the west, toward the finish line at Harrah's. Like the 5K race, both runners and walkers are welcome in the half marathon, as long as they can finish the race within the event's four-hour time limit.
