Details
Now celebrating its 13th annual running, the Marathon to Marathon road
race is perhaps the perfect example of what a small town running event
is all about. Staged with its starting line in the nearby town of Storm
Lake, Iowa, and the finish line in Marathon, the race virtually doubles
the population of the town on the Sunday each June that it's run --
according to the 2000 census, there are 302 residents who call
Marathon home, and just over 300 runners crossed the finish line in all
four races combined at last year's running of the race.
A fast and flat race that takes place over the long stretches of rural
highway in northwestern Iowa, the race course starts (for those
participating in the full, 26.2-mile marathon) at Storm Lake High
School, at 621 Tornado Drive. For those running in the half-marathon,
the starting line lies
at the 13.1-mile marker on Highway C43, the half-way point in the race,
and continues on with the remainder of the full-marathon course to the
finish line at the Marathon Community Center, at 300 W Attica Street.
Transportation will be provided from the high school to the half-way
marker for all participants in the 13.1-mile half marathon, which
starts at 7:00 AM. The race event also will feature a five-person relay
for the full marathon, as well as a 5K Run/Walk and a "Tot Trot," a
short children's run that takes place at the community center in
Marathon.
