Event Details

A beautiful early autumn road race that shows off one of the country's great smaller Midwestern destination cities, the Siouxland Lewis & Clark race is really three races in one -- a full marathon, a half-marathon and a five-person marathon relay. Mostly fast and flat with the exception of a hilly stretch in the early part of the race, the course takes runners along a combination of paved city streets, urban park bicycle paths and riverside trails that wind through downtown.

The 13.1-mile half marathon begins at the half-way point of the full marathon, at Kirk Hansen Park near the intersection of West 19th Street and Sioux River Road in the western part of the city. From there, the race treks immediately northward along Sioux River Road, hitting its biggest change in elevation between miles 2 and 4 (which are miles 15 and 17 of the full marathon). After the fourth mile marker, the race begins its descent again and flattens out for the next nine miles toward the finish line on historic 4th Street, just blocks from the confluence of the Floyd and Missouri Rivers.

Along the course, runners are treated to wide-ranging views of the city known as "Siouxland" to locals, including city parks like Stone State Park, the Loess Hills, the Lewis & Clark Trail and the Perry Creek Trail, the Floyd Monument. Also eye-catching is the natural scenery throughout the race, from the meandering waters of the Floyd, Missouri and Sioux rivers to the changing fall colors, natural grasslands and running creeks.

Now entering its seventh annual running in 2009, the race is growing but still has a smaller, more intimate feel -- just over 340 runners crossed the finish line in all the races combined in 2008. While the full marathon starts at 7:00 AM, the half marathon starting time is 8:30 AM, and race organizers will provide shuttle transportation for all those participating in the half to the starting line.

Race Weather & Climate

Located on the western edge of the state, just across the Missouri River from Nebraska, the Sioux City area typically sees mild to moderately cold and mostly dry conditions in the early fall, though snowfall isn't out of the question. In October, monthly temperatures average between 64°F and 38°F, while precipitation amounts average just under 2 inches for the month.
