Details
For a race that combines a run across the expansive Kansas countryside
with a small-town feel, the Eisenhower Marathon & Half Marathon
has been well-received by past runners and spectators for its
well-organized event stations and water stops as well as its finish
line setup for participants and medal ceremonies. Fast and largely flat
(the course experiences a change of about 130 feet throughout the
entire race), this is reportedly an excellent race for experienced
runners as well a first-time half-marathoners.
From the starting line at the Eisenhower Center Presidential Library
and Museum on 4th Street, the half marathon course takes runners
southward along Buckeye Avenue, crossing a bridge the Smoky Hill River
on the route toward Brown Memorial Park. Race participants run around
the park along 2000 Avenue and 1935 Lane, and then return to Buckeye
Avenue, where they continue running southward and merging with Gulf
Road, which they take until the intersection with 1500 Avenue.
Here, the course turns westward and begins its final few miles toward
the finish line near the cemetery after Fair Road. Throughout the race,
the course features gently rolling hills and many areas (especially
once runners cross the river) with little scenery to speak of -- in the
more rural sections of the course, it's mainly wide open spaces. These
stretches have a beauty of their own, however, one you'll share with
the roughly 370 or so fellow runners who compete in this event's full
marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K races each year.
