Event Details

Featuring an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in Shawnee Mission Park, the roughly 1,250-acre park filled with a lake as well as plenty of ponds, marshes, meadows and forest lands, the Pilgrim Pacer Half Marathon also features a 10K and a 5K race, both of which are open to runners and walkers. The race is set for just its third annual running in the fall of 2009, timed perfectly before Thanksgiving to ease a little of the guilt every runner feels over holiday eating.

From the starting line near the "Theatre in the Park" area just off Renner Road, runners follow an out-and-back 13.1-mile route that runs in a roughly north-south direction. After leaving the starting area, runners follow park roads through Shawnee Mission Park along the northern edge of Shawnee Mission Park Lake, and then head westward toward the banks of the Kansas River that flows nearby.

The course then curves southward along the bends in the river, taking runners southward along a combination of paved roads and park trails, underneath highway overpasses and along the flowing river. Once runners reach the half-way turnaround point, between Highway 10 and College Boulevard (also West 11th Street), they head back northward along the course they've just run, back to the finish line in the park.

Runners who've taken part in this young race in the past couple of years describe it as a very "laid back" race, and a nice change of pace from big city halfs. There are virtually no spectators along the course (with the exception of the start/finish area), which makes for a race with more solitude and quiet if you're used to big-city race events.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the northeastern corner of the state, roughly 20 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri, the city of Shawnee typically experiences mild to cool and even cold weather conditions in the mid-fall season, and usually with drier conditions in the month the race is held than the previous months. In November, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 53°F and 36°F, while precipitation amounts average about 2.3 inches for the month.

Fees

$35 for the half marathon
$30 for the 10K $25 for the 5K
