Running With the Cows Half Marathon & 5K

Saturday, May 11, 2024 • Bucyrus, KS • Course Map

Set for its 14th annual running along the rolling country roads of this small town in eastern Kansas, just a half-hour’s drive south from Kansas City, the Running With the Cows Half Marathon & 5K takes runners on an out-and-back zig-zag-like route that starts and finishes at Queen of the Holy Rosary-Wea Catholic Church.

From the starting line along Metcalf Avenue in front of the church, runners first head north along Metcalf for roughly the first mile and a half, until they meet up with the intersection with 215th Street. There they turn right and head east for about a mile until they reach Rockville Road, where they turn left and head north along Rockville for the next mile.

The race route turns east again on 207th Street, which runners follow for about a mile until the second left turn on Mission Road, which runners follow north up to the race turnaround point, which lies just south of the intersection of Mission and West 191st Street.

Once runners make the turn, they then head south back along Mission Road, this time for roughly the next two miles until they reach 207th Street again.

There, they turn right and head west, and retrace their steps along the route they ran in the first half of the race, all the way back to the starting line. The course makes a final left turn and heads south on Metcalf, bringing runners back in to the finish line in front of the church.

Throughout the race course, runners can expect to see plenty of the comforts and friendliness of small-town Kansas. The race generally fields a smaller group of runners than most bigger-city races and the terrain is largely flat and fast, and run on paved surfaces through most of the race.

The race will benefit both the Queen of the Holy Rosary Church as well as Catholic Relief Services, the international relief effort organization that serves the poor and vulnerable across the world.
