Details
The runners who come out each summer to run the challenging, hilly
course at the Daniel Boone's Run For Statehood Half Marathon -- which
usually number around several dozen to just over 100 for the race,
which also includes a 5K run and a one-mile fun run -- get a chance to
see the beautiful countryside and rolling hills and mountains of the
Northern Kentucky area. Though Falmouth itself is very much a small
town with just over 2,000 residents, the larger area is home to some
300,000 people, many of whom work and commute to the nearby Cincinnati,
Ohio, area.
Playfully described by organizers as a course that's "flatter than
Pike's Peak," the race takes runners along the hilly country roads and
city streets in and around Falmouth, along an out-and-back course that
starts and finishes at the intersection of Shelby and Main Streets in
Falmouth. In contrast to the 13.1-mile half marathon course, the
event's 5K and one-mile races take place along a mostly flat course,
organizers from the local Pendleton Pacesetters Country Club.
When they participate in the race, runners get a chance to see a
community that's in renewal, as the town of Falmouth has been the site
of significant natural disasters over the past few decades, mostly from
flooding that has occurred from the rising of the Licking River, which
runs past the center of town. Both in 1964 and again in 1997, the town
was devastated by floods which left much of its downtown areas and
surrounding homes under water. The town's resilient residents have
always responding by rising above the disasters that have befallen
them, and have renewed and rebuilt their community to enjoy this race
for the past 16 years.
