Event Details

More than 800 runners crossed the finish line in the 26.2- and 13.1-mile races combined at the 2008 running of the Louisville Marathon & Half Marathon, which take the field each fall through the city streets of what is perhaps Kentucky's most famous city, the site of the sporting world's most exciting two minutes every spring with the running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Louisville's fall marathon and half marathon road race take runners along a fast and mostly flat course that winds through downtown and along sections of the Ohio River, which passes by just to the north of the city and divides the states of Kentucky and Indiana.

The out-and-back race starts and finishes in downtown Louisville, with its starting and finish lines at the Water Tower on River Road. Between the start and the finish, the course takes runners past several of the city's most noteworthy areas and landmarks, including Thruston Park, past the River Road Country Club and Louisville Soccer Park, along the Old Portland Wharf Park along the river and within shouting distance of Eve Bandman Park along the river.

Both the half and the full marathon start runners off at 8:00 AM, and race organizers add that the only significant hills runners encounter along the course are found between mile markers 6 and 9, while the rest of the course is "very flat," they add. No race day registration will be available, so those thinking of running the race are strongly encouraged to sign up ahead of time.

Race Weather & Climate

Known for its hot, humid summers and milder, cooler spring and fall seasons as well as relatively even precipitation year-round, the city of Louisville lies just across the state line from Indiana and typically enjoys mild to moderately cool (and sometimes cold) weather conditions in the early fall. In October, average monthly temperatures range between 68°F and 49°F, while rainfall totals average around 2.79 inches for the month.

Fees

$35 for the half marathon, if registered by October 2, 2009
$50 after Oct. 2
