Kentucky > Renfro Rock & Run Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk
Mount Vernon, KY  •  Saturday, November 16, 2013  •  Course Map

This tiny town of just over 2,400 souls that was named for George Washington's home Mount Vernon plays host to the first-ever running of the Renfro Rock & Run Half Marathon & 5K in mid-November 2013, along an out-and-back course that features a few steep hills and long stretches along the banks of Lake Linville.

Runners get their chance to run through the area known as the Renfro Valley here in central southern Kentucky, home to the world-famous Kentucky Music Hall of Fame & Museum, which named Steven Curtis Chapman and the Kentucky Headhunters among its inductees for the class of 2013. The race starts and finishes just down the street from the hall of fame, on Richmond Street in Renfro Valley.

From there, the course heads north and west, along Hummel Road and Lake Linville Road, which takes runners along the shoreline of the lake for the race's next two miles. Just after leaving sight of the water, between mile markers 3 and 4, the course hits its first big hill as the elevation jumps nearly 300 feet in roughly a mile. That's followed by a very gradual incline over the next few miles, and then a gradual decline that starts between miles 7 and 8.

There's a steep drop between miles 10 and 11 along Mount Zion Church Road, and then the course largely flattens out for the last three miles or so of the race, which finish back in Renfro Valley on Richmond Street, where the race began. Runners will need to be able to complete their 13.1 miles within the course time limit of 4 hours -- after that, support for the race will be closed down, organizers note, which means that volunteers, water stops and the finish line setup will be removed.

Walkers are welcome to participate in either the half marathon or the 5K, as long as they too can complete their race within 4 hours.
