Louisiana > Jazz Half Marathon & 5K
New Orleans, LA  •  Saturday, October 12, 2013  •  Course Map

A couple of weekends before Halloween in 2013 brings the 5th annual running of the New Orleans Jazz Half Marathon & 5K, both of which take runners on a fast, flat course through the paved streets of one of the most interesting cities anywhere in America, known around the world for its architectural, cultural and natural beauty, which despite the ravages of Hurricane Katrina remain intact.

Begun as a benefit for the Children's Hospital of New Orleans, the race will start downtown at the city's Lafayette Square, and follow an out-and-back course that loops through uptown New Orleans as well as the city's historic Garden District and its beautiful, spacious green Audubon Park, which is also home to its zoo, aquarium and insect exhibit known as the "Insectarium."

And because the course winds through this city, much of which lies at or below sea level, the race is very flat with little uphills or downhills to speak of. The info above describes the 2012 course; the 2013 race route is subject to change.

Once runners make their way through the city, they'll finish the race back at Lafayette Square downtown, where a post-race party and musicfest will be underway. All runners must be able to complete its 13.1 miles within four hours, which means they'll need to keep roughly an 18-minute-per-mile pace or better.

Just over 2,400 runners crossed the finish line at the 2011 race in both the 13.1-mile and 5K events combined, with more than 2,000 of those finishers in the half marathon alone.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the banks of Lake Ponchartrain in southeastern Louisiana, just miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the south, New Orleans typically experiences hot, humid summers followed by mild to cool fall and winter seasons.

In October, average monthly temperatures range between 60°F and 80°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3 inches for the month. On the day of the race (Oct. 12), the average low is 61°F and the average high is 81°F.
