Event Details

Halloween weekend in 2009 will bring the first-ever running of the New Orleans Jazz Half Marathon & Merrill Lynch "Run For The Children" Relay Challenge, both of which will take runners on a fast, flat course through the paved streets of this, one of the most interesting cities anywhere in America, known around the world for its architectural, cultural and natural beauty, which despite the ravages of Hurricane Katrina remain intact.

Begun as a benefit for the Children's Hospital of New Orleans, the race will start downtown at the city's Ernest M. Morial Convention Center, and follow an out-and-back course that loops through uptown New Orleans as well as the city's historic Garden District and its beautiful, spacious green Audubon Park, which is also home to its zoo, aquarium and insect exhibit known as the "Insectarium." And because the course winds through this city, much of which lies at or below sea level, the race is very flat with little uphills or downhills to speak of.

Once runners make their way through the city, they'll finish the race back at the convention center downtown, where a post-race party and musicfest will be underway, headlined by the locally-based Trombone Short and Orleans Avenue band. The race begins at 7:00 AM and all runners must be able to complete its 13.1 miles within four hours, which means they'll need to keep roughly an 18-minute-per-mile pace or better.

Runners who don't wish to run the full half marathon alone can take part in the event's Merrill Lynch Relay Challenge, which consists of four-person teams who complete the same race course run by the individual half-marathoners, only in stretches of three to four miles per team member.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the banks of Lake Ponchartrain in southeastern Louisiana, just miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the south, the city of New Orleans typically experiences hot, humid summers followed by mild to cool fall and winter seasons, and its driest weather of the year on average during the month this race is held. In October, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 80°F and 60°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3 inches for the month.

Fees

$60 for individual entries
$150 for half marathon relay teams
