Event Details

An estimted 5,800 runners came out to run through the streets of what is probably the country's most culturally, architecturally and musically interesting city at the 2008 running of New Orleans' Mardi Gras Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which takes runners on a course through the city in the days leading up to the annual pre-Lent party to end all parties -- a judgment you'll no doubt share if you've ever been in New Orleans during this time of year.

After using a different starting point a few years ago thanks to the devastation wrought by 2005's Hurricane Katrina, the race returned to its traditional starting line at the Louisiana Superdome, the home field of the NFL's New Orleans Saints and the annual site of college football's Sugar Bowl. From there, the course saw some new twists and turns in 2008, as runners followed a new route that took them past the city's Audubon Park early in the race, as well as through the French Quarter, the famed Garden District and along Bourbon Street and St. Charles Avenue.

With the exception of a single overpass, participants run the course at an elevation that's below sea level the entire race. Most of the course is fast and flat, just like the city itself, so there's very little in the way of hills or changes in elevation throughout either the 13.1-mile or the 26.2-mile courses.

Race Weather & Climate

With cool to mild weather in winter, New Orleans normally sees temperatures averaging between 46°F and 65°F in February. Be prepared for rain, however -- the city sees an average of just under 5.5 inches of rainfall during the month.
