Details
A smaller half marathon race event that takes runners on a course that
winds along the bends in the Ouachita River that flows through this
northern Louisiana town, the Monroe Parks & Recreation Half
Marathon welcomed just under 100 finishers at the fall 2008 running of
its annual 13.1-mile event, which starts on the riverbank just off
Riverside Drive and finishes in nearby Forsythe Park.
Runners start the race near the tree-lined riverfront area just off the
intersection with Riverside Drive and Forsythe Avenue, and takes
runners first on a quick out-and-back along the river and then back up
to Riverside Drive, which they follow up to Monroe's Park Avenue and
northward into town, sticking closely to the roads that run parallel to
the river. The course also stays on paved surfaces throughout the race,
and features very few hills -- it's mostly flat and fast.
In fact, the only significant hills to speak of occur in the race's
early going, as runners make their way along the river levee, and when
they cross the bridge over the levee at the points between mile markers
6 and 7, and then again between miles 10 and 11.
