Details
Part of a weekend-long series of races that includes a full, 26.2-mile
marathon, a marathon relay, a 5K and a fun run for kids up to age 12,
the Frederick Running Festival half-marathon race features a fast
course with gently rolling hills that winds through the streets of this
city in west-central Maryland that lies about an hour's drive north of
the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Limited to 500 runners for the
half -- and 2,000 runners overall -- the out-and-back race starts and
finishes at the Frederick Fairgrounds.
From the starting line at the fairgrounds, runners follow a roughly
clockwise route along the loop course for the half marathon, running
along East Patrick Street and turning first on Market Street and then
again on 5th and Bentz Streets before heading onto Carroll Parkway,
which takes runners along the southern edge of Bentztown Spring Park
and Butler Park, just below Cutler Lake. The route takes a brief detour
through the park across West College Terrace and then back onto Carroll
Parkway before turning onto Kline Boulevard and then Fairview Avenue,
which runners follow all the way around to the northern side of Baker
Park, and then onto 2nd Street for the route that leads back into
neighborhoods and city blocks.
The race then begins an arc that takes runners from the 9 o'clock all
the way to the 3 o'clock position in the race course, running past the
campus of Frederick's Hood College as runners continue along Fairview
Avenue and onto 13th and North Market Streets. Runners then head next
onto 16th and Schifferstadt Streets, passing by Fredericktowne Village
Park, as they make the turn at the northenrmost point in the race,
where North Market Street gives way to Monocacy Boulevard. Runners then
follow Monocacy all the way southward as it becomes Gas House Pike, all
the way back to the fairgrounds for the race finish.
