Event Details

Run on the weekend after the Memorial Day holiday through the streets of this town just to the north of Baltimore, the Maryland Half Marathon also is run as a benefit for the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland. This out-and-back race starts and finishes on opposite ends of the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium, and offers a mixture of flat stretches and some significant hills along a race course made up entirely of paved surfaces.

From the starting line at the southern end of the fairgrounds, runners follow the course heading out onto West Timonium Road, which they follow west for the first mile and a half or so of the race until meeting up with Jenifer Road, where they turn right (north) and run along the eastern edge of the Baltimore Country Club at Five Farms. The first two miles or so of the race are mostly uphill, climbing roughly 200 feet in elevation from the start to the second mile marker.

After passing through mile 2, runners head around the northern end of the club grounds and onto Marys Chapel Road, which they follow south through the club and which features the rolling green pastures of the golf course on both sides of the road. The next four miles or so of the course are mostly downhill, as runners trek through to the halfway point in the race with only one minor hill between mile markers 4 and 5. As runners head along West Seminary Avenue, they turn onto Thornton Road and hit the mid-point of the race course, passing by Essex Farms Park twice as they run a roughly mile-long out-and-back along Thornton.

The second half of the race takes runners northward along Thornton all the way through Padonia Park back up to West Timonium Road, and runners hit the second big uphill of the race between mile markers 7 and 9. Runners turn onto Honey Ridge Road (which becomes Valleyfield Road) for a nice downhill stretch through the area known as Mays Chapel, following the course as it continues downhill along miles 9 through 11. After this stretch, the final couple miles of the race feature a gradual uphill toward the finish line back at the fairgrounds.

Race Weather & Climate

Located about 15 miles north of Baltimore, the town of Timonium shares much the same weather conditions as its neighboring town Towson, which also lies just to the north of Baltimore. In May, average monthly temperatures range between 75°F and 53°F, while rainfall amounts average around 5.57 inches for the month, making May the area's wettest month of the year on average.
