Event Details

More than 400 runners turned out for the inaugural running of this northwestern Maryland community's Mountain Maryland Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K in the spring of 2009, which took runners over a challenging and hilly course here in the Allegheny Mountains between the towns of Cumberland and Frostburg, which lies just to the west.

All three races in the event start and finish at the Canal Place Heritage Area, a shopping, entertainment and historic district in downtown Cumberland. From there, runners follow North Mechanic Street up through the area known as The Narrows, and then head west on the National Highway out toward the town of Frostburg. While those running the full, 26.2-mile marathon will make their way all the way over to Frostburg, the turnaround point for those running the 13.1-mile half marathon occurs between Cumberland and Frostburg near Campground Road.

After runners hit the half-marathon turnaround point, they then head back east along the National Highway until they reach the turn onto Long Drive, where they turn left and continue as the road becomes Cash Valley Road. The half marathon route takes runners about two miles along Cash Valley Road until the turn-off on the right for the Great Allegheny Passage, a rails-to-trails project that follows the path of the former Western Maryland Railway around the U-shaped Helmstetter's Curve, which those running the full marathon follow all the way eastward from their turnaround point in Frostburg.

This race's mountain location, as you might have guessed, means that the race route is often hilly and can be quite challenging for even experienced runners, as the elevation climb for the full marathon is about 1,900 feet from the race start to the mid-way point in Frostburg. While those running the half won't experience quite that degree of elevation climb, they'll still need to be ready to tackle the hills and climb from the start in downtown Cumberland to the high point near the half-way turnaround, and along the Great Allegheny Passage trail back toward the finish line.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the northwest corner of Maryland, roughly midway between Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., the city of Cumberland tends to experience mild to moderately cool conditions in the mid-spring season, and relatively even precipitation throughout the year (May is the area's wettest month on average). In April, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 67°F and 39°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.1 inches for the month.
