Event Details

Filled with rolling hills along the rural countryside of Maryland's upper Montgomery County, just across the Potomac River from Virginia, the Riley's Rumble Half Marathon takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Riley's Lock on Poolesville's C&O Canal, near the Bretton Woods Golf Course. This popular warm-up event for the regional marathon events that take place later in the fall usually attracts 500 runners or more, so prospective entrants are encouraged to register well in advance of the race, before it fills up.

From the starting line on Riley's Lock Road, runners follow a course that takes them northward and then westward all the way to the turnaround point on Hughes Road, where they follow the course they've just run back to the finish line, which lies about 300 yards from the starting line. Along the way, the course takes the field mainly along Montevideo Road and Sugarland Road, and its only real flat stretches occur at the start and the finish of the race. In between, there are lots of rolling hills, with the most significant elevation changes occurring between the 1- and 3-mile markers and the 10- and 12-mile markers.

Race Weather & Climate

Run during the Poolesville area's warmest month on average, the race usually takes place with July temperatures averaging between 65°F and 86°F. Come prepared for wet weather, as precipitation averages nearly 4 inches during the month.
