Details
This beautifully picturesque small town in the hilly countryside of
western Maryland hosted the inaugural running of its Western Maryland
Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk in the fall of 2008, when 136
runners crossed the finish line in this race that serves as both a
fundraiser for the local Habitat For Humanity chapter and to promote
health, fitness and wellness as well as awareness of the abundant
natural beauty of this corner of the state.
As in last year's race, the event's October 2009 running will start and
finish at Joseph Hancock Jr. Primitive Park and follow an out-and-back route along
the Western Maryland Rail Trail, a rails-to-trails project that
features 21 miles of paved asphalt trails along what was once the
Western Maryland Railroad. Now a popular trail among locals for
jogging, walking, biking and hiking, the trail stretches from Hancock
roughly 10 miles eastward to Fort Frederick State Park, and westward to
the area known as Polly's Pond.
Canopied by trees throughout the race, the trail follows the waters of
both the Potomac River and the C&O Canal and takes runners out
from the park to approximately 6.5 miles, where runners then turn
around and head back to the park for the race finish.

Weather & Climate
Located in northern Maryland, just south of the state line with
Pennsylvania and just under 100 miles northwest of Baltimore, the town
of Hancock typically experiences moderately cool to sometimes cold
conditions in the mid-fall season, with relatively even precipitation
throughout the year. In November, the town's average monthly
temperatures range between 55°F and 32°F, while
precipitation totals average just over 3 inches for the month.

$50 for the half marathon, if registered by September 26, 2009
$60 after Sept. 26 through the day of the race
