Massachusetts > The Great Hyannis Road Races Johnny Kelley Half Marathon
Hyannis, MA

Date

Event Details

Named for the legendary "Marathon Man of Boston" who competed in more than 60 Boston Marathons between 1928 and 1992 -- and twice won the race, in 1935 and 1945 -- the Johnny Kelley Half Marathon is one of three running events at The Great Hyannis Road Races, the annual springtime running event that also includes both a 7.2-mile and a 5K run.

In addition to his illustrious Boston Marathon career, Kelley also qualified for the Olympic teams in 1936, 1940 and 1944, and competed in a wide range of distance races staged by the Amateur Athletic Union over the years. Kelley also never made any money to speak of from his running career -- he was employed full-time all through the years, primarily for the Boston Edison Electric Company. As if his already legendary athletic accomplishments weren't enough, he was 84 years old when he ran his final Boston Marathon in 1992.

The race that bears his name is a fitting tribute that takes runners on a scenic route through the streets of Hyannis and Hyannis Port, starting near the intersection of Main and Ocean Streets in Hyannis. From there, the out-and-back course winds through coastal areas like Kalus Beach, Craigsville Beach and the Hyannis Harbor, and includes views of the John F. Kennedy Memorial, the Kennedy compound on Cape Cod and the villages of Hyannis Port and Centerville.

The course for the race is paved throughout, run on city streets and coastal roadways, and features only gently rolling hills combined with plenty of flat stretches. Though it's not closed to traffic during the race, organizers report that runners can expect to see only light auto traffic during their run, which begins at 7:15 AM and finishes up by 1:00 PM.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the southern shore of Cape Cod, just over a 70-mile drive from Boston, the village of Hyannis typically experiences cool to mild weather conditions in the late spring, with plenty of wind as you'd expect thanks to its coastal location. In May, the town's average monthly temperatures range between 62°F and 48°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.2 inches for the month.

Fees
