Event Details

Monson Memorial City Hall in the Massachusetts town of the same name serves as the starting and finish line for the Monson Memorial Classic Half Marathon, an event inaugurated in 1996 to commemorate local residents Kelly and Kathy Waldron Perry, two sisters who passed away from cancer within eight months of each other. The race will mark its 14th annual running in November 2009, and proceeds will go towards the Curt and Shonda Schilling Foundation as well as Griffin's Friends, two foundations that provide support, education and awarness to support those with cancer and help fight the disease.

Ever since its first running, the race has been run in their memory and the proceeds donated to a range of nonprofit organizations that care and raise money for those with cancer, including the American Cancer Association, the American Lung Association and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The course for the race unfolds almost entirely south of the city, taking runners southward from City Hall straight down Route 32 for the first 3.6 miles of the race. From there, the course turns onto Stratford Hollow Road, continuing south onto Cedar Swamp Road for the next 1.7 miles. The course continues around the base of Peck Hill (which reaches an elevation of 1,500 feet) and then onto Peck Brothers Road for the next 1.5 miles, after which point the course turns back onto Stratford Hollow Road back to the finish line.

Those interested in participating should train for hills, as the race starts at an elevation of about 407 feet above sea level (at the starting line at City Hall) and reaches a high of about 833 feet as runners reach and run around Peck Hill, where the elevation then again begins to descend back toward the finish line.

Race Weather & Climate

Situated in the central-south portion of the state and just a few miles from the border with Connecticut, the town of Monson (population 8,359 in 2000) can see weather conditions that are quite cold in mid-November, as temperatures during the month average between 29°F and 49°F. Come prepared also for wet weather, as the area averages 4.29 inches of precipitation during the month, making November the city's second-wettest month on average.
