Details
A small, friendly and challenging race that takes runners along the
trails and hills of
northern Michigan's Rifle River Recreation Area, the Ken Willard
Memorial River Trail Half Marathon is among the smallest running events
of its kind anywhere in the state -- in 2007, just over 30 runners
crossed the finish line at the park's day use area, where the race
starts and finishes. Set in the Au Sable State Forest, the park is a
popular destination for locals for hiking, mountain biking, hunting and
fishing on its Devoe, Grousehaven and Lodge Lakes.
The race takes runners over a combination of well-groomed natural
trails through the woods and a number of what race organizers describe
as "challenging" hills. Located just over four miles east of Rose City,
Mich., and south of Lupton, the park's roughly 4,300 acres have been a
state park since the formerly privately owned land was donated to the
state in 1945, and have since become a quiet, beautifully scenic area
that draws more than 100,000 visitors each year.
Open to runners only, the race starting time is 10:00 AM, and those who
haven't signed up but wish to participate can register at the race
starting at 8:00 AM. Also described by organizers as a race "you have
to run to believe," the event's proceeds will go to benefit the
Rifle River Recreation Area and help to maintain and beautify it.

Weather & Climate
Located in northern Michigan, about 30 miles northwest of the shores of
Saginaw Bay, the town of Lupton tends to see mild to cool and
occasionally cold weather conditions in the early fall, with occasional
wet weather. In September, average temperatures range between
71°F and 42°F, while rainfall amounts average around
3.54 inches for the month.
