Details
Set in this Michigan town just off Interstate 96 between Lansing and
Grand Rapids, Mich., Portland plays host each August to the Portland
Riverfest Run, including a half marathon, 5K run, a non-competitive
"walk for the arts" and a kids' fun run.
Participants in the half
marathon follow a course that crosses three of the city's historic
bridges, and along the shores of both the Glass and Looking Glass
Rivers (which give rise to Portland's designation as the "City of Two
Rivers"). The 2.5-mile walking race takes participants past the
historic Red Mill and along the Grand River. All races begin at 8:00 AM
except the Kids Fun Run, which starts at 8:30 AM.
The Riverfest Run races are part of the Portland Riverfest, a three-day
weekend of festival activities from Aug. 24-26. Organizers bring out
the works -- everything from hot air balloon rides, arts and crafts, a
horse show and a fishing tournament to a pet parade, bed race, canoe
race, food and entertainment.
To get to the starting line for the races at Portland High School, take
I-96 to Portland (exit 76); north on Kent Street towards town; left on
Grand River Avenue; cross the bridge; right on Water Street (which
becomes Lyons Road) 1.1 miles to Portland High School.

Weather & Climate
With over 4 inches of average rainfall during the month, August tends
to be the Portland area's wettest month, so bring your running jacket
and come prepared for rain. Temperatures tend to be mild to moderately
warm, averaging between 58°F and 79°F.
