The breezy, shaded trails, pathways and roads of the town of Charlevoix on Lake Michigan are the setting for the Red Rock Company's Run Charlevoix Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K, a race event that features some of Lake Michigan's most breathtaking scenery during one of the times of the year when it offers some of its best weather conditions.
From the starting line in downtown Charlevoix, the out-and-back course runs through downtown and out to the beachfront on the lake, with half of the 13.1-mile course taking place on cool, wooded bicycle trails along Highway 31. The race courses for both the full marathon and the half marathon are certified by USA Track & Field.
The starting and finish lines lie at Charlevoix's famous draw bridge downtown, at the corner of Bridge Street and Pine River Lane. After the race start, the course then proceeds in a mostly northward and eastward direction from downtown, taking runners out for long stretches along the Lake Michigan beaches and along what locals describe as "knee-friendly" wooden bridges for nearly a third of the course.
Once you've run out among the sunshine and winds of the lakeshore, the course then turns back inward towards town along Old Orchard and Waller Road, passing Charlevoix Country Club and meeting the bike trail at the intersection with Highway 31. Runners in both the half and full marathons run for the next 3 miles along the bike trail, reversing at the turnaround point near the beach.
Just over 1,200 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in all four races combined in 2012, and race day registration is available in case you're not able to sign up before the cutoff date for mail-in registrations. While you're in town, enjoy some of its sights like nearby Horton Bay (where author Ernest Hemingway grew up), Beaver Island and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore.
Scheduled starting times for the full marathon and half marathon are 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM, respectively, followed by the start for the 10K and 5K races at 8:00 AM. Entrants who register as walkers for either the full or the half marathon may start their race as early as 6:00 AM.
