Details
Rolling hills along southern Michigan's rural country roads are the
setting for the Somerset Stampede Half Marathon & 5K, which
welcomed just over 320 runners and walkers for the 2009 running of
the race. Featuring a mix of paved roads and dirt hiking and horseback
riding trails, the course takes participants on a clockwise,
out-and-back loop
through the countryside south of town, starting and finishing near
Mission Lake.
The race is mostly hilly throughout, starting near the lake at an
elevation of just over 1,100 feet above sea level, reaching its lowest
point early in the race at the first mile marker, and rising to a peak
of nearly 1,200 feet around mile marker 5 and 11. All along the way,
the scenery is the picture of a rural horse country postcard, as
tree-lined paved country highways give way to dirt roads with plenty of
wide-open fields and pastures.
While the half-marathon is open to runners only, the 5K race is open to
both runners and walkers -- and last year's event brought in more than 30
walkers. Both races begin at 7:30 AM at the Somerset Beach Campground
near Mission Lake, on Brooklawn Court.

Weather & Climate
Located in southern Michigan, about 30 miles or so from the state line
with Ohio, the town of Somerset Center generally sees late summer
weather that's mild to moderately warm, with occasional cool
conditions. In August, average temperatures range between 80°F
and 58°F, while rainfall amounts average around 3.48 inches for
the month -- making August the area's wettest month of the year.
