Minnesota > Earth Day Run Half Marathon, 20-Mile & 5-Mile
St. Cloud, MN • Saturday, April 20, 2013 • Course Map
Race organizers call this "Minnesota's Premier Half Marathon event" and the number of attendees and spectators certainly give credence to that -- the spring 2011 running of the Earth Day Half Marathon welcomed nearly 1,500 runners for the half-marathon alone and nearly 2,900 runners in all to the streets of downtown St. Cloud, for an event that has also served in past years as the state's USATF Half Marathon Championships.
Part of a two-day festival to celebrate both Earth Day and the ninth annual running of this event, the race starts and finishes downtown near the city's Beaver Islands Park, and takes runners on an out-and-back tour of the city's neighborhoods, parks and bridges crossing the stretch of the mighty Mississippi River that criss-crosses through the heart of the city. In addition to the 13.1-mile half marathon for individual runners, there is also a 5K and a 20-mile eco-challenge race.
By turns long, straight and flat as well as slightly hilly in spots, the race course features its biggest changes in elevation around the mid-way point of the race, when runners will experience really the only drop of any significant elevation change throughout the 13.1-mile course. The last few miles of the race are largely fast and flat as runners make their way into the finish line.
The individual-runner half marathon is limited to 1,650 runners, while the 5K and 1K youth run are limited to 1,500 and 1,000 participants, respectively. The half marathon and relay will start on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, while the 5K and 1K will take place the previous Friday evening. The race also hosts a 20-mile challenge race, which takes place on Saturday morning along with the half marathon, and is open to up to 225 runners.
Race Weather & Climate
Set about 60 miles northwest of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the city of St. Cloud straddles the great Mississippi River and enjoys much the same weather as its much larger neighboring city to the south -- cold winters, mild summers and cool springtime weather. In April, temperatures average between 56°F and 33°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 2.5 inches for the month.
On the day of the race (April 20), the average high is 57°F and the average low is 34°F.
