Details
The rolling hills and trails surrounding northern Minnesota's Fish Hook
Lake are the setting for the FishHook Challenge Half Marathon &
5K, a summertime road race around the shores of the lake from which the
race gets its name. An out-and-back loop race that starts and finishes
at Heartland Park, near the entrance to the Heartland Trail, the course
offers a race run on paved surfaces throughout with some of the best
scenery of the state's lake country.
The race takes runners on a clockwise course around the lake, starting
from the park and heading northward up Highway 71 and westward to
Highway 18, where the course turns north again to begin its route
around the lake. While these first five miles or so of the course are
mostly flat stretches, the final seven miles along the Heartland Trail
on the eastern side of the lake are hillier, followed by the last mile
of the race, which is run on flat terrain.
A smaller road race event, the FishHook Challenge attracted just over
70 runners for the half-marathon and 100 for the 5K in its 2007
running, its 14 annual. Runners can register on race day, and the half
marathon starts at 7:30 AM while the 5K begins at 9:30 AM.
