Details
Nearly 800 runners and wheelchair participants took to the
streets of this central Minnesota city for the marathon, half marathon
and relay at last year's Med-City Marathon, which will celebrate its
13th annual running in 2008 as the Rochester YMCA's premiere road race
event. From the starting line at City Hall in nearby Byron, Minn.,
participants follow an eastward-running course toward the Rochester
Family Y on 1st Avenue.
Following a scenic course that takes runners through a mixture of
tree-lined streets, parks and golf courses as well as through downtown
city blocks, the race is run on paved surfaces throughout, and features
plentiful rolling hills for the first eight miles. After the 8 mile
marker, the course flattens out and remains level throughout the rest
of the half-marathon portion of the event (as well as the full
marathon, which continues on for another 13.1-mile loop past the half
marathon finish line).
Certified by USA Track & Field and sanctioned by the Road
Runners of America, the race is open to runners and wheelchair
participants only (no walkers), and all races begin at 7:00 AM. Half
marathon participants need to be aware as they approach the finish line
at the Y (which is likely to be very congested), as they will be
directed away from the relay and full marathon participants, toward the
right into the exchange zone.
