More than 1,500 runners and inline skaters crossed the finish line in both races combined at the third annual running of the Minnesota Half Marathon & 5K in late summer 2012, which takes runners on a long, out-and-back loop run along the banks of the Mississippi River here in Saint Paul, and features long stretches alongside the parks that parallel the river.
From the starting line at Lower Landing Park, which during the 1800s was one of the busiest landings for steamboat traffic along the Mississippi, runners follow the course southwest along Shepard Road toward Crosby Lake Regional Park, where runners hit both the mile 5 marker and the race's first turnaround point. Then runners head back along Shepard in the opposite direction, all the way back toward Lower Landing.
Runners keep going once they make it back to the starting line area and remain on the same road as it becomes Warner Road, which they follow all the way around the bend in the river to the second turnaround point, near the intersection with Childs Road. The last mile of the race brings the field back to the Lower Landing area for the race finish, giving runners a view of the planes landing and taking off at the St. Paul Downtown Airport on the other side of the river.
Race Weather & Climate
Like its neighboring twin city just a few miles west, St. Paul usually sees summers with warm but not overly hot weather, and also typically experiences its rainiest weather in the summer months.
In August, average monthly temperatures range between 61°F and 81°F -- on Aug. 3, the average low is 63°F and the average high is 83°F -- while rainfall totals average just under 4.4 inches for the month.
