Details
One of two half-marathon events sponsored by Team Ortho in Minnesota's
Twin Cities area, the Monster Dash 5K & Half Marathon gives
runners a tour of the Lake Calhoun/Lake Harriet area in the
southwestern part of the city, as well as the parks and greenspace
areas along the Minnehaha Parkway. Something of a combination between
an out-and-back and a loop course road race, the Monster Dash is a
favorite of many "ghouls" and "goblins" celebrating Halloween just a
few days later.
The course starting and finish lines overlook Lake Harriet just outside
the gates of nearby Lakewood Cemetery (also appropriate for the season
and the holiday!). From there, the course takes runners southward along
the western edge of the lake and then turns eastward just after running
past Lynhurst Field on West 50th Street. The course continues along the
Minnehaha Parkway for the next couple of miles until reaching the
turnaround point near 16th Avenue South (about mile marker 5.5), where
runners then begin the trek back toward Lake Harriet.
This race, which also is run entirely on paved roadways along city
streets and through the parks, is unique for its welcoming attitude
toward participants who wish to bring strollers as well as their pets
-- they're free to join in on the course. There is also a Halloween
costume contest and a Monster Dash Fun Run at 10:00 AM. The
half-marathon starts at 9:30 AM, and is limited to 1,500 entrants.
