This small central Minnesota town about 80 miles north of Minneapolis
celebrates the 28th annual running in 2008 of the Mora Half Marathon
& Classic 5K, part of the Mora Classic series of road racing,
biking, canoeing and cross country skiing events spread throughout the
year. Though the race starts and finishes downtown, most of the race
takes participants through the green, rolling countryside just outside
town, on an all-paved course with a number of rolling hills.
Considered an excellent preparation run for the Twin Cities Marathon
that takes place every October, the 13.1 miles of the Mora half take
participants through the rural roadways of Kanabec County, starting
downtown at Union Street. The route follows its first two miles through
the city, and then heads in the direction of the town's northwestern
corner, heading west along West Maple Avenue for most of the remainder
of the race.
After heading west on Maple, runners turn northward at Jade Street and
continue for the next few miles to 230th Street, where they turn east
and then south again on Joplin Street, running along asphalt rural
roads through acre after acre of farmland, through some tree-lined
stretches as well as areas where the horizon is wide open. Once the
course reaches the edge of town again, the route turns northward
briefly on Central Avenue, Grove Street and Wood Street before heading
east and then southward on Highway 65. The race finish line is at the
lakeside park on Maple Avenue.
Both races are open to runners and walkers, and begin at 8:00 AM for
the half marathon and 8:15 AM for the 5K. Race day registration will be
available at the Vasaloppet Building at 100 Union Street South.

Late summer weather in this small Minnesota town tends to be mild to
moderately warm with occasional rain, as August brings average
temperatures that range between 80°F and 53°F.
