Event Details

Run for the first time ever in the late spring of 2009, when more than 2,500 runners lined up for all of its four races combined, the Stillwater Marathon, Half Marathon, 20-Mile & 12K races features a half-marathon course filled with a combination of flat and hilly terrain as well as stretches, especially in the race's early miles, that take runners along the scenic riverfront of the winding St. Croix River that flows by the town and divides Minnesota and Wisconsin here in the state's southeastern corner.

The course for the half marathon, which is known offically as the Jon Francis Half Marathon in honor of the local athlete and excellent runner who died in a mountain climbing accident in Idaho during the summer of 2007, follows basically the same route as the first 13.1 miles of the full marathon course. From the starting line on the banks of the St. Croix River, on Highway 95 just south of downtown Stillwater, the course takes runners on a point-to-point course that follows the river for most of its first few miles, through the town of Bayport all the way down to the southernmost point in the race, at 22nd Street.

After making the turn onto 22nd, runners then turn again onto Stagecoach Trail and follow the road northward up into the Oak Park Heights area, followed by a few turns once runners make their way into Stillwater for the final couple miles of the race, in toward the finish line at the city's Pioneer Park. While the last mile of the race is mostly downhill (thankfully), runners can expect some hilly terrain over the last three to four miles, particularly between the mile 9 and 11 markers.

While they're in town for the event, runners will no doubt want to take in some of the attractions for which Stillwater is so well known around the region, including its bookstores, antique shops, restaurants and the city streets and neighborhoods of this community as well as the surrounding St. Croix River Valley, which has served as the setting for movies like Grumpy Old Men, Beautiful Girls and Fargo.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along the St. Croix River in the southern part of the state, roughly 30 miles east of Minneapolis and just across the state line from Wisconsin, the city of Stillwater typically sees mild to moderately warm weather conditions in the early spring, and moderate rainfall as the spring and summer bring the area's heaviest precipitation. In May, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 72°F and 49°F, while rainfall amounts average just over 3.5 inches for the month.
