Mississippi > The Biggest Loser Run/Walk Jackson Half Marathon & 5K
Jackson, MS  •  Saturday, April 6, 2013  •  Course Map

Inspired by the hit reality television series, the Biggest Loser Run/Walk race series gets its start in late 2012 and early 2013 with a series of 5K, 10K and 15K races as well as its first-ever half marathon in Mississippi, which will take place along the streets of the state's capital city Jackson, along a fast and mostly flat route with only gentle hills.

The race series -- which starts with three races in 2012 and expands to nine races in 2013, with all-new half marathons in Panama City Beach, Fla.; Racine, Wis.; and Erie, Pa. -- is aimed, like the television series, at inspiring people who've neglected their health and fitness with events that are open to both runners and walkers, and feature less challenging (read: easier) courses, especially like the fast, flat terrain of the Mississippi Delta region.

Runners will start the Jackson half marathon in the city's downtown area, in the Art Garden at the Mississippi Museum of Art Museum on South Lamar Street, near the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. From there, the course spreads out through the city along a clockwise loop route, taking runners east past the campus of Jackson State University as well as along the edges of both Millsaps College and Belhaven University.

After making their way north on a long straightaway stretch along State Street and Old Canton Road, the course turns left to head north along the Interstate 55 frontage road, and then right to turn south and head back in the direction of downtown, this time bringing runners along the edge of Lefleur's Bluff State Park. Though there are some gently rolling hills throughout the course, they're mostly small and none are too challenging for runners new to 13.1-mile races.

Every runner and walker who completes the race within the course time limit of 5 hours will receive a finisher's medal, and the race will also present age group awards to the top three finishers in each of 13 age divisions (14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 24, etc., all the way up to age 70 and above).

In addition to the half marathon and the 5K for adults and older kids, there is also a kids' challenge for entrants age 12 and under at 11:45 AM, sponsored by the Kids Fit Foundation.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in central Mississippi, about 180 miles north of New Orleans, La., and roughly 230 miles southwest of Birmingham, Ala., Jackson typically sees April temperatures that average between 75°F and 52°F, while precipitation amounts average just under 6 inches, making April the city's wettest month of the year.

On the day of the race (April 6), the average high is 73°F and the average low is 49°F.
