Missouri > BAJA Half Marathon & 5K
Festus, MO • Sunday, September 29, 2013 • Course Map
Set for its 3rd annual running along the streets and neighborhoods of Festus and Crystal City, the BAJA Half Marathon -- officially titled the Bone And Joint Awareness Run -- is set to take runners on an out-and-back course through the city streets and neighborhoods of this pair of "Twin Cities" that lie right along the banks of the Mississippi River just south of St. Louis.
For the race's second annual running in 2012, just over 210 runners crossed the finish line near Festus Senior High School.
Runners start the race at the football stadium of Festus Senior High School, which lies just off Midmeadow Lane and Sunshine Drive. From there, they follow a route that winds eastward through downtown Festus along West Main Street, passing by both this small city's quaint homes as well as restaurants and retail shops. Runners then make a turn on South Mill Street about halfway between the mile 1 and mile 2 markers, and head south toward Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
The course brings runners south along South Mill Street, Veterans Highway and South Truman Boulevard, almost all the way to the intersection with Interstate 55. Just before reaching that, however, runners make their way around the hospital complex at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, running a loop around the circumference of the property and then re-joining South Truman Boulevard, where they turn right and head north.
Rolling hills are found throughout the race, but the course flattens out the most in these early miles, between miles 3 and 5, as runners head back up South Truman in the direction of the Mississippi River. The course begins gradually rising over the next couple of miles, as runners make their way north along Mississippi Avenue which overlooks the river.
That's where runners follow Hugs Landing Road all the way out to the river and back, and the course is filled with mostly rolling hills after that on the way back toward Festus. Much of the remaining miles cover stretches runners have already run earlier in the race, with the exception of a brief stretch along East Main Street and the final half-mile or so, which take runners off Main Street and into Sunset Park, where they cross through the park's trails and then into the neighborhoods to its west, which take them back to the high school football stadium for the race finish.
