Event Details

More than 460 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined -- with an estimated 260 running the half marathon -- at the inaugural running of the Boomtown Days Half Marathon & 5K, which takes runners along a course with plenty of hills and long, steady ascents through the streets of Joplin, Mo., as part of this southwestern Missouri town's annual Boomtown Days festival that draws an estimated 40,000 attendees each year for live music concerts, fireworks, a car, truck and motorcycle show and more.

The out-and-back loop course for the race starts and finishes at the intersection of West 8th Street and South Joplin Avenue, and starts out by heading south along Joplin through the first mile to the intersection with 22nd Street. Runners turn left on 22nd and then head west toward Picher Avenue, where they turn left again and head south along Picher as it winds its way along tree-lined streets toward McClellan Boulevard, which runners follow all the way down to the southernmost point in the route, where they make the turn onto Crow Road and then again onto Old Schifferdecker Road.

At this point in the race, as runners are making their way past the mile 5 and 6 markers, the course begins a long, steady ascent through the parkland areas and into Joplin's residential neighborhoods, passing by the Twin Hills Country Club as they make their way through miles 7 and 8. The rest of the course after this point contains a number of rolling hills as the field hits Historic Route 66 for a brief stretch and then runs around Schifferdecker Golf Course for the home stretch, the last couple of miles through the city streets of Joplin back to the finish line.

The highest point in the course, at an elevation of about 1,073 feet above sea level, occurs right around the mile 1 marker, while the lowest point in the course occurs between the mile 4 and 5 markers, where it drops to just over 890 feet above sea level. The start and finish line lie within the newly renovated areas of Joplin's downtown, beautified with new streetscapes, and along the course runners will pass by Shoal Creek and the Grand Falls waterfall, and cross over Short Creek between the 8th and 9th mile markers.
