Event Details

With a course that features both city streets and the running and biking paths along Cape Girardeau's Cape LaCroix Creek bike trail, the City of Roses Half Marathon, 5K & Fun Run will mark its 29th annual running in September of 2009. More than 280 runners crossed the finish line in the half marathon and the 5K combined in 2008, with more than 170 of those runners finishing the half alone.

The course for the race starts and finishes at Southeast Missouri Hospital's HealthPoint Plaza on Independence Street, and takes runners on a route that winds through the city's historic "Old Town" as well as along stretches of the Mississippi River that flows right by the city, which lies just across the river from Illinois.

The out-and-back loop route is mostly flat and fast with a few moderate hills along the way, and winds through Cape Girardeau's Arena Park (which lies just a few blocks away from the starting line), along Main Street and Water Street along the river and back to HealthPoint Plaza for the finish.

While the half marathon is open to runners only, the 5K is open to both runners and walkers, and the Fun Run is open to kids age 12 and under. The first race to start is the half marathon (at 7:30 AM), followed by the 5K at 7:45 and the Fun Run at 8:30 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along a bend in the Mississippi River near Missouri's southeastern corner, the city of Cape Girardeau typically sees mild to moderately warm (and occasionally hot) weather conditions as summer is giving way to fall, and relatively even precipitation throughout the year, except for the spring, when rainfall averages its highest amounts for the year. In September, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 81°F and 58°F, while rainfall totals average just over 3.3 inches for the month.

Fees

$40 for the half marathon, if registered by September 5, 2009
