Nearly 600 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in the 13.1-mile
race alone at the fall 2008 running of the Maynard Cohick Half
Marathon, which is now part of the
Bass Pro Shops Outdoor Fitness Festival, which will also include a full
marathon and the Ozark Greenways 10K & 5K running events over
the weekend. The oldest running event of its kind in the Springfield,
Missouri area, the race for the half follows a fast, flat course
through the local trail system known as the
Ozark Greenways, a unique set of natural paths that offer safe, scenic
running for the race events.
Both the full and the half marathons start at the same time and
location -- the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store in Springfield. As
described by the event organizers, the Outdoor Fitness Festival
combines an array of activities and presentations geared toward the
running events as well as wildlife adventures with Wonders of Wildlife;
kayak , canoe and GPS Geo Caching competition and classes with
Springfield-Greene Country Parks and Recreation; a fitness and health
Fair; health screenings and education with St. John’s and
CoxHealth; and other outdoor related activities and education.
The weekend's events are co-sponsored by the Ozark Mountain Ridge
Runners, which will lead training groups during the months leading up
to the race weekend for both full- and half-marathon participants. They
will provide training schedules, hydration and nutritional tips and
weekly group long runs along the actual marathon route.
Race
Weather & Climate
Cool and sometimes cold, wet weather is usually the rule in the
Springfield area in the late weeks of fall, though temperatures (which
average between 35°F and 53°F in November) tend to be
on the warmer side at the beginning of the month. Come prepared for wet
weather, as the area sees an average of nearly 4 1/2 inches of rainfall
during the month.

$35 for the half marathon, if registered before July 1, 2009
$45 between July 1 - October 28
$55 between Oct. 29 - 31
