Event Details

Filled with numerous rolling hills with a few steep uphills and downhills thrown in, the Columbia Half Marathon Challenge is an event that challenges runners in more ways than one, as race organizers partner with the local Central Missouri Community Action nonprofit to raise awareness and funds to support the organization's mission of helping local families in need fight poverty and achieve self-reliance.

The course for the event, which also includes a three-person relay race for runners who don't wish to run the full 13.1 miles by themselves, starts at Columbia's Peace Park, near the corner of South 8th Street and Elm Street, on the edge of the campus of the University of Missouri. From there, runners begin a route that takes them southward for the first third of the race and then into a counter-clockwise loop around the parkland areas south of the university.

Much of the course during the middle third of the race is refreshingly green and tree-lined, taking runners along Campusview Drive and the Grindstone Parkway as well as into the 200-plus-acre Grindstone Nature Area and Capen Park, through which participants run along the park's wooded hiking and biking trails and open field greenspaces. After exiting the park on Rock Quarry Road, runners then begin the last four miles of the race back to the finish line, heading north back to campus to cross the finish at 8th & Elm.

Run mostly on paved surfaces, with the exception of a few areas inside the parks, the race features a roughly 185-foot change in elevation overall, hitting a low of about 618 feet above sea level just before the mile 3 marker and a high of nearly 800 feet between miles 6 and 7. Last year's race brought out more than 500 participants for the individual and relay races combined, and the race begins at 8:00 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along Interstate 70 near the center of the state, about halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis, the city of Columbia typically sees mild to cool weather conditions in the early fall weeks, with relatively even rainfall spread throughout the season. In October, average temperatures range between 68°F and 44°F, while rainfall amounts average around 3.18 inches for the month.
