Event Details

With the help of Missouri Governor Matt Blunt and more than 14,000 other runners who signed up for 2008's eighth annual GO! St. Louis series of races -- which include a full marathon, half marathon, kids fun runs, a 5K and a "mature mile" for senior runners age 60 and older -- this year's race was the largest of its kind in the state's history. Kristin Armstrong, the former wife of cyclist Lance Armstrong and a prominent public advocate for fitness and health, also participated in the race as a runner in the event's half marathon.

Conditions were sunny and pleasant at this year's race, which started and finished near St. Louis's World War Memorial Park and the Savvis Center auditorium, on 14th and Market Streets. From there, the course takes runners along a route made up entirely of paved city streets, through the city's downtown areas along the Mississippi River, toward and within great view of the famed Gateway Arch that marks St. Louis as the "gateway to the west," as well as sights like the Cardinals' Busch Stadium and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.

Once they reach Broadway approaching the Arch, runners then turn right and head south for the next few miles toward Lyon Park, where they turn around and begin heading back northward toward the arch, turning left on Chouteau and then right on 12th Street. Once they hit Market Street (and pass by the starting line), runners will then begin the final out-and-back stretch of the race that takes them out to Forest Park Avenue and St. Louis University, where they turn around and then head back for the finish at Soldiers Memorial at 1315 Chestnut St.

The elevation of the course ranges from about 450 to 625 feet above sea level throughout the overall race, and the changes in elevation are largely gradual inclines and declines, which can tempt you to run at a faster pace earlier in the race -- past participants say to stick with your planned pace, however, as you can easily exhaust yourself, especially if conditions are unexpectedly warm. Probably the most significant hills occur around the first mile and the eighth mile markers, and the last few miles into the finish line are mostly even and flat.

Race Weather & Climate

Situated along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River on the eastern edge of central Missouri, the city of St. Louis is known for typically mild to cool weather in the early spring, with relatively even rainfall and other precipitation throughout the year. In April, average monthly temperatures range between 66°F and 47°F, while rainfall amounts average around 3.82 inches for the month.
