Event Details

More than 450 runners crossed the finish line in all races combined at the summer 2008 running of St. Louis's Joker's Wild Half Marathon & 5K road race, which marks its third annual running in 2009 on the St. Louis summertime running race calendar. Made up of a 6.5-mile quarter-marathon distance course that participants in the half marathon run twice, the race keeps runners together in a fairly tight loop route within the Maryland Heights section of the St. Louis metropolitan area.

From the start and finish area at Westport Plaza, which lies just off the stretch of Interstate 270 that runs north-south along the western edge of the city, runners make their way around the six and a half mile loop in a clockwise route, making turns onto Progress Parkway, Kimler Drive and Weldon Parkway before hitting the long straightaway stretch along Dorsett Road.

Once runners reach Schaefer Drive, the race begins its southward turn into the neighborhoods and more residential-style areas of Maryland Heights, heading along Page Avenue, Ball Drive, Adie Road, Centerline and Westline Industrial Drive before making it back to Westport Plaza again, where quarter-marathoners finish their race and half-marathoners hit the halfway point and begin the second lap of the course for the final 6.5 miles.

To help runners beat the heat on what promises to no doubt be a warm and steamy July 4th weekend in St. Louis, race organizers start the race at 6:00 AM before the real heat arrives later in the day. The race also is run entirely on paved surfaces -- no gravel or natural trails of any kind along the course -- and features no significant uphills or downhills, or other changes in elevation.

The course also will remain open to traffic during the race, and will be sectioned off by cones along the road -- so runners will need to keep aware of their surroundings and possible traffic.

Race Weather & Climate

Arrive trained and ready for warm-weather running, as July is the St. Louis metro area's warmest month of the year on average. With monthly temperatures that normally fall between 91°F and 71°F in July, expect sunny, hot conditions and possible rainfall, as precipitation amounts average around 3.78 inches for the month.

Fees

$60 for the half marathon, for individual entries
$180 for half marathon relay teams
$30 for the 5K
