Details
St. Joseph, where the Pony Express began and the legend of Jesse James
ended, is the site of the second annual Spring Fling 5K, 10K, and
Half Marathon hosted by Central High School. Over 100 racers
turned out for the inaugural race in 2008, and we are expecting at
least double the numbers this year. All races will begin at the Central
High School South Parking lot on the corners of 26th and Sylvanie at
8:00 a.m. and the 5K, and 10K are walker friendly.
The 5K race will
take runners south along the parkway to Bartlett Park and return to the
school. The 10K race will continue past Bartlett Park just past Bode
Ice Area and return to the school. The half marathon will continue to
Hyde Park and make a loop throughout the park and return to the school.
All races are run on paved surfaces with aid stations approximately
every 2 miles. Water, Gatorade, snacks, and energy gels will be
provided along the course. The same will be available at the finish
along with other fruits and bagels.
The course is very gradual in climb
and decent with a steep incline in the first mile and then a couple of
steep hills at the 4th, and 7th mile markers of the ½
marathon. The good news is you get to go down those hills on the
return. This race benefits the Central High School Physical Education
Department and their effort to provide the best physical education in
the state of Missouri. All intersections are patrolled by volunteers
who are cheering and supporting runners throughout all the races.

Weather & Climate
Located in the northwest corner of Missouri, about an hour's drive
north from Kansas City, the town of St. Joseph typically experiences
cool to mild weather conditions in the mid-spring season, with
relatively plentiful rainfall in this part of the year. In April, the
area's average monthly temperatures range between 66°F and
42°F, while rainfall totals average around 3.23 inches for the
month.
