Montana > Celebrate the Swan Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Condon, MT • Saturday, June 29, 2013 • Course Map
In northwestern Montana, the 11th Annual Celebrate the Swan Half Marathon will take place on the last weekend of June 2013. Runners will line up at the Condon Airstrip and have a chance to race through portions of the land that the Swan Ecosystem Center (SEC) preserves.
The SEC is a non-profit community group that helps people work together to sustain the valley's natural resources and rural and wild characteristics. They do this through stewardship, education, economic viability, and conservation on both public and private land.
The beautiful backdrop of the Swan Valley makes it picture-perfect for a scenic race course. Hundreds of lakes and over 4,000 wetlands, potholes and fens dot the more than 410,000 acres of land that encompasses the Swan Valley Watershed, which is home to a wide variety of different species of rare native plants and animals such as grizzly bears and bull trout. Although the race takes place along the road, runners will make their way through the heart of Swan Valley, with beautiful scenery throughout the entire race.
With 83 half-marathon participants in 2012, the course is guaranteed to not be crowded. After leaving the airstrip area, runners will take the course along Falls Creek Road and head northeast, following the course along the road and past the first of a series of markers at the half mile mark. (The race also hosts a one-mile, 5K and 10K race as part of the Celebrate the Swan event.)
Within the next mile, runners will encounter the 5K turnaround point loop and continue heading northeast. By the time they reach 3.1 miles into their own race, runners will see the final turnaround point for the 10K racers. As they continue along, Falls Creek Road will merge with Condon Loop Road. Runners will run north on Condon Loop Road until they make a sharp left to stay on the road. Just before a 3-way stop in the road, runners will loop back towards the finish line.
They will retrace their steps back, encountering the same course from the opposite vantage point. At the finish line, stick around to watch winners collect awards and gift certificates from local restaurants and businesses.
