Event Details

One of Montana's smaller half-marathon road races, with just over 100 finishers in both its 13.1-mile and 10K races in 2008, Great Falls' Kickin' Assphault Half Marathon & 10K takes runners along both the northern and southern banks of the Roe River that passes right through the heart of the city, giving runners plenty of views of the water flowing by as well as the mountains off in the distance.

The half marathon starts in Giant Springs State Park, which lies on the eastern edge of the city, and follows a point-to-point course that takes runners first along the southern banks of the Roe, along the riverside trail that winds along the river to the 9th Street bridge. It's known as the East Coulee Trail, and takes runners on a paved trail up a hill that features gravel surfaces for a brief stretch, followed by paved trails again on the way toward the intersection with the 9th Street bridge.

Runners cross under the bridge (the trail takes them under the bridge) and then turn left to get onto the bridge and cross the river, where they then head along North River Road all the way to the turnaround point at the dam, and then head back along the road. The route westward leads runners into the area of Great Falls known as the old Smelter housing district, known for its old-style hand-made blocks, waterfalls and many old home foundations.

As the race route curves west and south with the bend in the river, runners keep following the trail until they reach the Central Avenue bridge, where they cross over and then turn left to continue on along the trail that parallels the river. The last few miles of the race take the field across terrain they ran on the initial miles out, and finish just a stone's throw from the starting line, at Heritage State Park.
