Nebraska > Bill Seymour Half Marathon & 5K
Grand Island, NE • Saturday, September 3, 2011 • Course Map
A late summer fixture on the local outdoor events calendar here in this small central Nebraska city, which counts legendary actor Henry Fonda among its local residents who've achieved fame and fortune, the Grand Island YMCA's Bill Seymour Half Marathon race featured an all-new course for its September 2010 running, along an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the city's Super Bowl Family Fun Center on Bismark Road, the course that will also be used for the race's 2011 running.
The race -- which also includes a 5K for runners -- is open to both runners and walkers, and follows a roughly 6.55-mile route from the Super Bowl Center along the edges of downtown Grand Island, and along portions of the paved biking, running and walking trails that wind their way southwest from the city toward the campus of Nebraska's Central Community College and the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, located just south of town.
Runners pass through Grand Island's Pier Lake Park in the race's early going before heading out onto the biking and running trails, as well as past the city's softball fields just off Phoenix Avenue, and Sothman Park as runners are approaching the Central Community College campus. The route then follows along the edges of the grounds of the Stuhr Museum, home to a number of "living history" exhibits that bring the prairie life of this part of the country from long ago to life.
Once runners hit the half-way turn-around point near the southeastern corner of the museum grounds, they then head back and retrace their steps along the route they've just run, all the way back to the Super Bowl Family Center for the race finish. The event is limited to 1,000 entrants, and both runners and walkers will need to finish the race's 13.1 miles within the three-hour time limit.
The race starting time is scheduled for 7:00 AM for the half marathon, followed by the 5K run at 7:20 AM.
