Event Details

Runners can expect a warm, friendly crowd here in this tiny southeastern Nebraska hamlet -- which bills itself as "Nebraska's oldest frontier town" -- at the annual running of Brownville Freedom Run, which marked its seventh annual running in the summer of 2009 and includes a half marathon, 10K and a 5K that take runners along the Steamboat Trace Trail just north of town, for a run alongside the banks of the Missouri River.

An estimated 130 runners and walkers took part in this year's running, which takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts on Main Street in downtown Brownville and follows a roughly north-south route up along the Silver Trace Trail, which follows the river that also serves as the dividing line between Nebraska on the western side and Missouri on the eastern side.

The trail itself -- a rails-to-trails project that converted the former Burlington Northern rail line here into a 21-mile running, biking and walking trail that stretches from Brownville to Nebraska City -- is a groomed and graded crushed rock surface, and unfortunately was soft and/or washed out in some sections due to the heavy rains the night before the race in 2009. That didn't deter the participants or spectators, however, who were able to enjoy the natural beauty of its both its tree-lined shaded sections and wide-open vistas.

Once runners reach the half-way point in the race, which occurs at about the point where the Silver Trace Trail comes closest to the waters of the Missouri flowing by -- they'll also come very close to the river just after heading out of town, and on the way back into town -- they turn around and head back along the route they've just run to the finish line back on Main Street, where the town's 4th of July "Freedom Festival" will get underway after the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the state's southeastern corner along the border between Nebraska and Missouri, roughly 75 miles south of Omaha, the town of Brownville typically experiences its warmest (and wettest) weather conditions of the year on average during the month the race is held. In July, the town's average monthly temperatures range between 90°F and 66°F, while rainfall totals average just over 4.4 inches for the month.
