The spring of 2009 will see Nevada's Fernley Half Marathon become the
first-ever Deron's Run Memorial Half Marathon & 5K, named in
honor of local resident Deron Mills. The race will follow the same
course as the 2008 event,
which welcomed more than 200 runners for an out-and-back run along the
hilly desert outskirts of this western
Nevada town, which lies just a short drive from the nearby
Reno-Sparks-Lake Tahoe metropolitan area. The stark beauty of the
surrounding high desert is found throughout the course, which features
plenty of rolling hills and ample views of the Truckee Canal.
Runners start the race at Fernley High School, located just off Highway
95, and head immediately south onto a dirt road and then into the
nearby White Bluffs subdivision, which they run through and then tackle
a short, sharp hill as they make their way onto Desert Shadows Lane.
After a brief stretch along Valley View Drive, the field then turns
right (east) back onto Desert Shadows Lane, which they remain on for
the next four miles or so until reaching the turnaround point at the
half-way mark, where they then begin the second half of the course back
the way they came.
The terrain for the race is a combination of blacktop roads and dirt
trails and roads, and runners should expect a mix of a few hills --
with one significant hill that participants cross over twice, around
the mile 2 marker and again at the mile 11 marker -- with
mostly flat and fast terrain for the bulk of the race.

Weather & Climate
Located in the desert of western Nevada, a little over 30 miles east of
Reno, the town of Fernley tends to enjoy mild to moderately cool (and
sometimes cold) weather conditions in the mid-spring season, and almost
nonexistent rain. In April, average monthly temperatures range between
66°F and 34°F, with just under half and inch of average
rainfall for the month.
