Nevada > Labor of Love Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 50K, 50-Mile & 100-Mile
Las Vegas, NV • Saturday, April 20 & Sunday, April 21, 2013 • Course Map

Located in the little-known and seldom-visited (by tourists) Spring Mountains of Nevada, about a 40-minute drive from Las Vegas, the area known as Lovell Canyon plays host to the Labor of Love road races, including a 50K, full 26.2-mile marathon and a half-marathon that take runners into the canyon for a spectacularly scenic run.
It's a pristine natural environment characterized by valleys surrounded by mountains, sagebrush and Joshua Trees everywhere and absolutely no facilities anywhere -- the kind of place where hikers and campers can really rough it outdoors.
Each of the races in the event shares the same starting line, the intersection of Lovell Canyon Road just off Highway 160, which lies about 30 miles west of Las Vegas and over the mountains west of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. Like the other two races, the half-marathon is run entirely on paved surfaces along Lovell Canyon Road, and is an out-and-back race that runs along the road to the 6.55-mile marker and back.
Runners start the race at an elevation of about 4,500 feet above sea level and climb all the way to 7,000 feet in the full marathon. The half-marathon doesn't reach that elevation but it does climb steadily uphill toward the half-way point (and steadily downhill on the way back). Half-marathon participants start their race at 7:30 AM, a half-hour behind the full marathon runners (who in turn start a half-hour behind the 50K runners).
No parking is available at the race venue/starting line, so buses will be provided to transport runners from an off-site parking location to the starting line. For the half marathon and the 10K, participants will be able to run on either Saturday or Sunday, as both races will be run on both days -- the 100-miler, 50-miler and marathon will be run only on Saturday, and the 50K will be run only on Sunday. Runners in either the 10K or the half marathon can choose either day (or both, if they feel up to it).
Race Weather & Climate
Famous for its arid desert climate that gets little to no rainfall at any time of year, Las Vegas also sees highly variable temperatures this time of year, as April temperatures average between 78°F and 56°F, while rainfall totals are negligible, averaging just over a tenth of an inch for the month.
On the day of the races (April 20-21), the average high on both days is about 80°F and the average low is 55°F.
