Nevada > Mesquite Tri States Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K
Mesquite, NV  •  Saturday, November 17, 2012  •  Course Map

Set for its fourth annual running in the fall of 2012, the Mesquite Marathon gets a new name for this year -- becoming the Mesquite "Tri States" Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K -- and a course that takes runners through three states for the full marathon and two states for the half marathon, along an overall downhill route between the small towns of Littlefield, Ariz., and Mesquite, Nev.

Nearly 380 runners crossed the finish line in the 26.2-mile, 13.1-mile and 5K events at the 2011 race, including 142 finishers in the half marathon alone. For the 2012 race, runners need to be aware that because there are few roads in this area -- in the desert of eastern Nevada, near the southwest and northwest corners of Utah and Arizona, respectively -- the course will remain open to automobile traffic during the race, so runners will need to stay on the left-hand side of the road, facing traffic, throughout the event.

That said, the course takes runners through some of the Southwest's most gorgeous, dramatic scenery. Red rock hills and mesas rise on either side of the road throughout the course, which unfolds along an overall downhill route between Littlefield and Mesquite, though there are some steep uphill climbs around the midway point of the half marathon, along County Highway 91 between Interstate 15 and the winding Virgin River.

Runners in the half marathon will start their race at the half-way point of the full marathon (which begins in Utah), near the Beaver Dam Lodge on Old Highway 91. From there, they'll follow Highway 91 south into Littlefield and under the I-15 bridge, where the course will curve to the right in the direction of the Arizona-Nevada state line. These first few miles are virtually all flat until runners reach the mile 4 marker, and there the course heads downhill for the next mile.

The downhill stretch doesn't last long, however, as by the time runners are reaching the mile 6 marker and the midway point of the half marathon, the course heads uphill again, and remains hilly for roughly the next mile and a half. By the time the course reaches the state line, the course flattens out again and remains flat most of the way in to the finish line in Mesquite. The finish line for the race is actually indoors, as runners will head off the road and inside the Casablanca Convention Center building on Pulsipher Lane to cross the finish line.

The scheduled starting time for the half marathon is 7:30 AM (the full marathon starts at 7:00 AM), and runners will board shuttle buses from the Casablanca Center to the starting line, starting at 5:30 AM for the full marathon and 6:45 AM for the half marathon.

Race Weather & Climate

Located near Nevada's southeastern corner, about 85 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Mesquite typically sees November temperatures that average between 67°F and 37°F, while rainfall totals average just over half an inch for the month. On the day of the race (Nov. 17), the average high is 66°F and the average low is 36°F.
