National Nurses Half Marathon & 5K

Saturday, March 5, 2016 • Las Vegas, NV • Course Map

“It’s not just for nurses!” That’s what the organizers of the National Nurses Half Marathon & 5K want to emphasize to all runners and walkers considering this race, as it is open to everyone who’s up for the challenge.

The race is set to take runners on a point-to-point course through the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area about 20 miles outside downtown Las Vegas, a 195,000-acre desert park filled with stunning red, orange and earth-toned sandstone formations, waterfalls and petroglyphs, where early humans scrawled drawings and images on the walls of the rocks here thousands of years ago.

For the half marathon, runners will follow the roughly 13-mile-long Red Rock Canyon road that runs through the park for nearly all of the race, which starts in Blue Diamond Park and finishes at West Career & Technical Academy. Runners in the half marathon will start their race at 7:00 AM, followed by the runners and walkers in the 5K race at 8:00 AM.

The race is part of an initiative among nurses to promote healthy communities across America, by encouraging people to exercise and adopt healthy lifestyles.

Founded by Helen Neville, a runner and a nurse whose three-decade-long career has also seen her chair and co-found a number of races around the U.S., including Iowa’s Des Moines Marathon, which she single-handedly founded and ran for years, the race is part of her effort to create “ambassadors for healthy living,” she says.

Ms. Neville’s claim to fame in the running community also extends to her recent book, “One On The Run,” a chronicle of her 93 days of running across America and the impact she’s made on lives in every community she visits.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in Nevada’s southwestern corner, Las Vegas typically sees March temperatures that average between 49°F and 70°F, with — as is typical here year-round — very little rainfall for the month, as March brings half an inch of rain.

On race day (Mar. 5), the average low is 48ºF and the average high is 68ºF.

I competed for the 2nd time in the National Nurses 5k in 2016. I know this is a late message, but I was planning races for 2017. There are no results for the 2016 5k and I have no idea how I placed. The race director had everyone handing in sticks and she was timing with her phone/stopwatch. I never received a T-shirt or an award( If I placed, which I have no idea) as promised. I will definitely not race another Nurses 5k and I will advise others about my experience and not to support it.

I registered in advance and ran 2016 National Nurses Half Marathon only to find that when I finished the race, the medals had run out for finishers due to the amount of race-day registrations and miscalculation of supplies by race administration. I was told the day of the race that we would have the medals mailed to us for finishing – especially after putting in 12 weeks of training and mastering a tough course – but after 3+ months and 4 emails I have not received any feedback status or medal for the race.

Can someone please let me know if this issue is being looked into and getting resolved?

    Thank you.

Hi Lindsey! Congrats on finishing the race and your hard efforts. I was one of the race winners- came in first for female in 5k. I was told the day of the race that the awards would be mailed out and still have not received anything!
