Event Details

A rugged, challenging trail race event that takes runners on a hike up and down Peavine Mountain, whose 48,000 acres overlook the northwest corner of the city near the University of Nevada-Reno, the Silver State 50K & 50-Mile Run will introduce its first-ever half marathon in this year's race, its 22nd annual here in northern Nevada. Designed for experienced trail runners, the half marathon will follow the same course used by the 50K runners for the first seven miles, and then return to the starting line via an alternate route back down the mountain.

Each of the three races in the event starts at Reno's Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, once a working ranch in the 1890s and now a public park with about 570 acres of pasture land, natural sage and hiking trails. The park is also part of an area in northern Nevada known as the Truckee Meadows, a swath of meadows, rivers and pasture land that surrounds Peavine Mountain and provides the gorgeous views race participants will take in as they climb and descend the 9,200 feet of elevation change in the event's two longer-distance races.

The terrain for the half marathon (as well as for the other races) is challenging. Runners should be prepared to encounter a combination of rocky single track trails and sometimes slippery dirt roads, many with gravel. For the half, runners will climb about 2,400 feet in elevation on the way out and descend about 2,300 feet on the way back, and will follow a combination of single-track trails and roads, many of which are old mining roads that harken back to the mountain's days as a center for mineral mining.

Race organizers encourage those thinking of running in the Silver State Trail Race events to sign up early -- the half marathon is limited to 175 entrants, while the 50K and 50-mile race are limited to 150 runners each.
