Details
Described by race organizers as a difficult, challenging course race
with a nearly 1,500-foot change in elevation throughout the course, the
Valley of Fire Marathon & Half Marathon is certainly aptly
named. The race start and finish lines are at the Lake Mead National
Recreation Area, the huge Nevada reservoir lake created by the Hoover
Dam. The out-and-back race takes runners through the Valley of Fire
State Park, along rolling hills and past many indigenous red rock
formations.
The race, which starts at 8:00 AM for full marathoners and 8:05 AM for
the half marathon participants (and 8:10 AM for the 10K runners), is
uphill all the way out to the turnaround points for both the half and
the full marathons, and downhill through the entire way back (with the
exception of an uphill in the last two miles). The scenic nature of the
course makes it a particularly beautiful run, which can take your mind
off the (very) challenging task at hand -- running your 13.1 miles.
